Abstract

Thecorrecthistologicdiagnosisofmasslesionsofthelivercanbedifficult,especiallyinbiopsysamples.Reticulin,glypican-3,andglutaminesynthetaearestainsthatcanhelpdistinguishhepatocellularcarcinoma,hepaticadenoma,andfocalnodularhyperplasia.

Toevaluatetheutilityofatriplestainofreticulin,glypican-3,andglutaminesynthetaeindistinguishinghepatocellularcarcinoma,hepaticadenoma,andfocalnodularhyperplasia.

Wholetissuesectionsandtissuemicroarrayswereevaluatedwithatriplestainofreticulin,followedbyglutaminesynthetae(diaminobenzidine,brownchromogen)andglypican-3(alkalinephosphatase,redchromogen).The09casesevaluatedincludedwholetissuesectionhepatocellularcarcinoma(n=6),tissuemicroarrayhepatocellularcarcinoma(n=9),wholetissuesectionhepaticadenoma(n=5),tissuemicroarrayhepaticadenoma(n=3),wholetissuesectionfocalnodularhyperplasia(n=3;%),tissuemicroarrayfocalnodularhyperplasia(n=3),aswellasnonmalignantliverparenchymaadjacenttohepatocellularcarcinoma(n=0).Allcaseswerescoredforreticulinbeingintactorlost,positiveornegativestainingforglypican-3,anddiffuse,maplike,perivenular,ornegativestainingforglutaminesynthetae.
